Portugal Golden Visa — Residency & Citizenship
I have visited Portugal many times and there is always something new and exciting to discover. Portugal located right next to Spain is growing in popularity due to the Portugal Golden Visa Program which first launched in 2012 and allows investors to obtain a valid residency permit in a fast track manner by either making a minimum investment of EUR 350,000 or minimum EUR 500,000 investment in real estate.
The Portugal visa is valid for one year and then can be renewed thereafter in intervals of two years provided that visa holders spend two weeks in the country every two years. With a Portuguese visa you have the right to live in Portugal including the right to travel to EU countries in the Schengen area. Under the Portugal Golden Visa Program there is a possibility to be considered a non-habitual resident whereby there is no tax on certain foreign-source income. What is the most interesting about the program is that after 6 years applicants and their families may obtain Portuguese Citizenship. With Portuguese Citizenship you have access to visa visa-free travel or visa on arrival to over 186 countries including Europe (Schengen area), US and Canada. So far, over a billion euros have been invested for the program with most applicants being Chinese nationals. Citizens from Brazil, South Africa, Russia, Lebanon and other parts of the world have also done the Portugal Golden Visa Program.
Portugal is a great place to live for it’s safety, security and stable government. There are many beautiful cities and small towns. Portugal has warm weather, several nice beaches and is a popular tourist destination particularly during the summer months. Personally, some of my favourite aspects about Portugal include easy access to beaches to go surfing, close proximity to other European countries, friendly locals, low cost of living, excellent healthcare and access to top Universities.
Other countries that offer similar program’s to Portugal’s Golden Visa program include Spain and Greece.
